excellent
Great book!
There are already a couple favorable reviews written. However I'd like to take an opportunity to specifically express why I enjoy this book;

(1). It hosts the expertise and collaboration of nearly fifty of the most well known and respected art historians and anthropologists working in Africa, Europe and North America.
(2). New Orleans' Marti Gras extraordinary artistic achievements owes over 100 years to African [American] traditions, garments and beadwork, particularly of the Yoruba and Cameroon peoples.
(3). Congo Square is reportedly derived from the Kongo people and the Congo dance. Most importantly, Congo Square is most remembered and discussed for the cultural practices of African descendants on Sunday afternoon.

This is much more than a nice pictorial publication. This book is a wonderful composition of functional objects centered around traditional ways of life among various African religions and cultures... "The cult of ancestors, spirits and dieties". The veneration and expressions of many of these examples might be viewed as bizarre by some. Many art enthusiasts [somewhat] admire, but mainly seek their asthetic values. Yet, the intended purpose of many relics still remain unknown today and are quite often misinterpreted.
I spent a couple of hours in the New Orleans Museum last year studying the African Art Collection. It's huge and very well curated in my opinion. What a great book this is; it's 375 pages, large format, all color photos, good quality printing and photography. It includes stories about each piece, sometimes with different interpretations of the meaning of the item, if such exists, written by nearly fifty of the most well known art historians, anthropologists and ethnographers in the world. Some of these stories are reprints of descriptions or stories written by others and well documented. I am really glad to have acquired this book and recommend it highly. Very engaging and informative...and beautiful. Well done! If you get a chance, go see the collection in New Orleans. It sits in a large park with outdoor sculpture and beautiful landscaping, not far from the French Quarter, maybe 1.5 miles or so.
